Cory and Stevens Gay Beach wedding celebration in Rincon, Puerto Rico

Cory and Steven tied the knot in the beautiful state of Colorado before heading down to Rincon, Puerto Rico for an amazing party with their family and friends. They chose the beautiful seaside venue 8th and Ocean as the location for their party. We had a chance to do some photographs on the beach and in a nearby bougainvillea garden before heading back to the party. These are their wedding photographs and a Q&A with the Groom and Groom.

Cory and Steven were a little nervous about having their picture taken at first. After a few different poses they relaxed and really opened up on camera.

When did the two of you first meet?

Cory – Thanks to the marvels of technology, Steven came across an old Yahoo personals page that I had honestly forgotten all about. I was working one day when I received an email and then we proceeded to IM daily until we were ready to meet for the first time.

Steven – 10 years ago, I was 22 and new to the dating scene. I was living and working in a small town more than an hour south of Houston. Knowing that it would be nearly impossible to find and connect with a like minded individual in my little conservative Texas town, I took to the Internet to explore the newly created World of online dating. I stumbled across Cory’s profile picture and although our profiles didn’t “match up”, I saw this lively individual that I knew could open my eyes and introduce me to a life in which I could be true to myself.

Tell us about your first date…

Cory – Steven joined me and about 8 other friends of mine at a Buffalo Wild Wings for cheap chicken drumsticks and tall glasses of beer. He was in real estate then and showed up in his khaki pants and short sleeve button down shirt. I thought he was adorable. We hit it off great and everyone thought he was just the cutest. At 22 then, he was definitely the youngest at the table. We had a great first date and then just a few days later, he joined me at a wild house party. We’ve been attached at the hip every day since…for the last 10 years!

Steven – I was having a tough day at the office when an elderly coworker of mine offered to set me up with her granddaughter. I politely declined and immediately contacted Cory to see if he would be available to meet me that evening for a much needed drink. He extended an invite to meet him and a “few friends” for wings and beer at a sports bar in the city. Being an introverted and shy country boy who had never been on a date with another man, I was shocked to hear myself respond with “I’ll be there in just over an hour.” The shock continued when I walked through the restaurant doors and was greeted by an overwhelming group 8 of Cory’s closest friends. Though not a typical date, it was the perfect first date for me. I was hooked once I saw the love and compassion that all at the table had for each other.

When did you know you were in love?

Cory – My love for Steven grew and developed into something greater than I ever knew possible. Every single day our love for each other has become bigger and bigger. I literally fall in love with him every single day.

Steven – it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment I fell in love. There was a type of love that I had felt even before we had met in person.  Then there was a new love and connection on our first date. It must have been love at first sight for me, because the next week I was driving an hour and fifteen minutes to be with him everyday after work and then waking up and driving another hour and fifteen minutes back every morning.

Who popped the question and how did it happen?

Cory – Steven and I, along with our close friend Sara, all rented a little house on a river out in the Texas hill country for a weekend. Sara was expecting her first daughter soon and wanted to shop at some local outlet stores for baby furniture. Before we left for an afternoon of shopping, Steven and I walked down to the river. There was a long, and very skinny bridge of sorts that we were standing on at the edge of the water. I wanted to get on one knee, but knowing how clumsy I am, I surely would’ve fallen in the water and definitely would’ve dropped the ring! I asked Steven if he had any plans for the rest of his life and asked if he would marry me. Naturally, he said yes! He was so surprised!

Steven – We had rented a rustic cabin on a river in the Texas hill country for a weekend to celebrate my birthday. My grandmother had just passed away a couple weeks earlier and we weren’t sure whether we were up for a vacation. Cory convinced me that the trip was just the type of relaxation the we needed to cope with the loss. The morning of his proposal I could definitely feel his excitement and anxiety, but I had no idea what for. He walked me to the end of a rickety pier that extended over the San Marcus river, took my hands, and asked me if I had plans for the rest of my life and would I marry him. Of course I said yes.

Cory, what are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?

There are so many things to be excited about that it’s hard to choose just one! In the last 10 years, we’ve put together such a great and happy family. We have our fur babies (2 dogs, 2 cats…and our turtle) and we have each other. I love coming home to that. I’m so excited about what our future holds. We’ve had plenty of challenges like any couple would and we just keep getting stronger, together.

Steven, what are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?

Everyday is a new adventure. I couldn’t ask for a better companion to experience all the thrills that life has to offer. I look forward to strengthening our bond more and more and continuing to learn and grow from each other.

Cory, what does true love mean to you?

True love, for me, means having that one special person that sees you. Really sees you, with your strengths and your faults and continues to love you unconditionally. They push you to be the best of version of yourself that you can be. Steven has made me a better person. I never knew that love could be this way. I absolutely love every minute of it.

Steven, what does true love mean to you?

True love is knowing that there will always be someone standing in my corner of the ring, cheering me on through life. We will always and forever be there for each other, no matter what life may throw at us. We are  better people thanks to each other.

Why did you choose to have your wedding celebration in Puerto Rico?

Cory- We had vacationed in Puerto Rico a few years back on the east end of the island in Luquillo. It was breathtaking! We knew we had to come back again!

Steven- I have a personal connection and love of Puerto Rico. My grandfather worked for Pan American Airlines and he and my grandmother raised my father and 2 aunts in Puerto Rico and Panama. I grew up hearing stories of my dad diving for lobster and fishing with my grandfather for dinner… Iguanas chasing them out from under the car they were working on together. I wanted to pay tribute to my grandmothers lavish weekly dinners and dancing on the rooftop terrace my grandfather built overlooking San Juan.

What is your favorite memory from your trip to Puerto Rico?

Cory-The best part of the entire trip was seeing how amazed all of our friends and family were from vacationing there. We continue to hear how thankful everyone is for inviting them and giving them one of the best and most memorable vacations they’ve ever had!

Steven- watching most of our guests experience Puerto Rico for the first time was priceless. The comments on how friendly the locals are, how stunning the beaches are, how amazing the food is… I will never forget this trip!

How did you find Rincon Images?

Thanks to Wilson Rios, he and the owner of the villa at 8th and Ocean, had Rincon Images listed as a direct referral for outstanding photography. We browsed through your fun photos and knew that you were a good fit. We’re so happy that we were able to capture our perfect day this way!

Why did you choose 8th and Ocean as your venue?

Cory- Little known fact about Steven…the man can research! He spent quite some time looking all over the island for the perfect location for our trip and it needed to house a lot of people! After some searching, he found Rincon. There were only a few locations in the area that could hold our guest list and 8th and Ocean was perfect for our needs.

Steven- I fell in love with the location of the 8th & Ocean and instantly knew that our reception was meant to be held on their back veranda. I wanted a beachfront venue that would allow everyone to relax and feel as if they were at their own private Caribbean villa. I wanted our guests to see a side of Puerto Rico that they would not normally be exposed to. Many in our group thought I was crazy for asking them to drive several hours away from San Juan, but I wanted to see and share with them what Puerto Rico means to me.

What was your favorite thing about your party in Puerto Rico?

Cory- The ENTIRE reception! It was absolutely perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better guest list. The staff was superb. The DJ was awesome! Food and drinks, outstanding. We set the bar pretty high that night!

Steven- watching so many people that we love and appreciate fall in love with the island life that Puerto Rico offers. Dancing to Latin music, eating amazing island food, rum drinks in hand. I believe our guests will always remember how easy it was to slip in to the island way of life the night of our reception.

Tell us a little bit about what you did after the party, did you take any special day trips or explore any beautiful places?

Cory-To be honest, we were pretty busy from start to finish. Our favorite was our trip to La Parguera. We took a snorkeling trip and had such an amazing time! Afterwards, we finished with a trip to the bioluminescent bay. Incredible! Everyone was blown away! Steven- we had brunch at a little inn on Sandy Beach while watching several professional surfers, then laughed as 2 of our group attempted to tackle the waves. Several of our guests went on a half day fishing excursion and brought back tuna that we grilled up that night for everyone. A few zip lined, repelled, and hiked the caves while others of us toured the light house in Rincon and ventured out to the waterfall. We ended our trip with all of our guests snorkeling in la parguera and enjoying a memorable sparkling swim in the bio bay that evening.

What do you think makes for a good, life long marriage?

Communication and patience. Knowing that everyday won’t be a honeymoon and to take advantage of the little things in life. Let each other know daily how much they mean to you and let the love continue to grow and evolve.

What about your wedding party was unique and different?

We didn’t really have a traditional wedding party. We kept it, for the most part, a bit more untraditional. We really just wanted a big, catered party! Every person at our reception brought their own distinct personality and together it turned out better than we could’ve ever imagined.

Steven- we skipped many of the typical wedding traditions… The first dance, cake cutting, best man speech, etc. Our reception was more of a celebration of the joining of our family and friends rather than a celebration of just us. There were no stresses of worrying what music needs to be played when, or what time should dinner be served. We allowed the night to flow on it’s own and everything happened exactly the way we had wanted.

What advice do you have for brides and grooms having professional pictures taken for the first time?

Relax! I was a little shy at first about the whole experience. It was our first professional photography session. But after a little time, and with the coaching from Frances, it worked out just fine!

As an LGBT couple did you experience any discrimination while planning your event? Do you have any advice for LGBT friendly wedding vendors?

We actually didn’t experience any discrimination. Everyone was extremely helpful through the entire process. We did make sure that all of our vendors knew that we were a same sex couple up front, just to make sure we wouldn’t come across any issues at our event. That didn’t seem to phase any one we worked with.

When planning your wedding party what were your favorite places to look for inspiration? (you had so many fun details, I loved the insta-camera! Who came up with that idea?)

Cory-Steven handled the majority of details when it came to the planning. He wanted to make sure that we kept with the beach motif, but also to keep things simple. And lighting was key for the dinner table!

Steven- Pinterest, of course, was a go to for great ideas! I wanted something more memorable than just a guest book for everyone to sign and I thought a scrapbook of sorts would be a great idea. With a little help from Pinterest, I fell in love with the idea of taking instant photos and having our guests write personal messages to commemorate the evening. I also wanted a few momentos that people could take home, so we decorated frames with shells for each guests instant photo along with personalized do not disturb door hangers.

Looking back is there anything you would have done differently?

Absolutely not a single detail would’ve been changed. It was simply perfect.

Is there any party of your day that you wouldn’t change for the world?

We feel truly blessed that everything went so perfectly. We couldn’t have asked for a better event, location, weather, group of people, or better vendors who we now consider to be friends. Many thanks and much love to all who were involved!

Hula Hoop Bride – OffBeat Wedding in Rincon, Puerto Rico

Hula Hoop Bride – OffBeat Wedding in Rincon, Puerto Rico

Jill contacted me last summer about photographing her intimate wedding in Rincon. We talked on the phone for a bit about different ideas for places to do wedding photographs. I was so happy when I realized she was a hula hooper! I am an avid hula hooper myself and have several LED hula hoops. After the wedding ceremony my assistant and I went back to the villa with them and made some great LED hula hoop photographs. This intimate wedding was a lot of fun to photograph, great people, good times and lots of smiles. They even read from a Dr. Seuss book as part of their ceremony!

Check out Jill’s Q&A:

Our first date was to see Toy Story 3. It was great because the theater was empty and so we were able to talk through the whole movie.

What about your wedding was unique and different?

Well the ceremony was something that I wrote, I looked through a lot of scripts and I didn’t feel like any of them really matched us, so that was crafted from scratch. We didn’t have any sort of traditional processional or a unity ceremony or anything you typically see.
We did a reading from Dr. Suess, a short prayer, said our vows and were on our way. We wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet.
We also did not have a typical reception.
We wanted our wedding day to feel like, our day. I have been to several weddings where I hear the bride and groom talking about how the wedding is for the family and the marriage is for the couple; and I really wanted to avoid that sort of feeling. We tried to focus on who we are, what we like, and what we wanted to do. We played with hoops and listened to music, we eat and drank and danced. It really was just an enjoyable evening and a fun night.

The whole wedding day really did feel stress free and fun because of that focus on keeping things down to earth, and us.

Why did you choose a destination wedding in Puerto Rico?

We really love Puerto Rico, we went last year and fell in love with Rincons’ whole atmosphere, it is where he proposed. Once we decided we wanted to do something destination, Puerto Rico just made sense.

What is your favorite memory from your trip to Puerto Rico?

I have a lot of favorite memories from the trip but I really enjoyed doing yoga at the Barefoot Bodega. The day before the wedding we had a private class there and it was just a really great way to relax and take a deep breath before the big day.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding day?

My favorite thing about the wedding day was just hanging out at the villa at the end of the day. Hooping, music, talking, hanging out, eating, it was just a really fun and relaxed night. We really wanted our wedding day to feel genuine to our every day lives, our number one goal was to keep things simple and as relaxed as possible and I think that we achieved that goal.

What was your favorite detail from your wedding day, dress, shoes,

flowers..?

My favorite detail was the backdrop for the ceremony. It was our only actual decoration and I’m really glad that it stood out.

Tell us a little bit about what you did after the ceremony.. dinner, dancing?

After the ceremony we walked around on the beach, stopped by the bar for a shot, and then we went back to the villa we were staying. We spent the evening eating skewers and flan, listening to music, hooping, and relaxing.

What advice do you have for brides having professional pictures taken for the first time?

Hire Frances! No one in our whole group has ever taken professional photos before and so no one really knew what to expect for the picture portion of the day, and honestly we were kind of dreading it. We were expecting to be asked to stand in a line doing the same things over and over and that’s not at all what happened. I really liked how you were able to guide us and make us feel really comfortable throughout the whole day while allowing us to keep our identity.

How many dresses did you try on before you settled on the one you wore for your wedding day. Where did you find it?

I actually purchased two previous dresses, when I bought my first dress we were planning on a big family wedding, and so when we scratched that idea I also canceled the first dress.
I then bought a tea length dress, but between the time I bought the dress and around the time of the wedding I went from a size 14 to a size 6, and the estimates for the alterations were more than what I paid for the dress.

The dress I ended up wearing; I bought about a month before the wedding.

How did you get the idea to cut your wedding dress so you could hoop in it? I loved that idea!

When we were on the beach, I was trying to hoop in the dress and the tool kept catching under my feet and tripping me. I knew that the dress wasn’t going to be worn again and I didn’t want to go just put on any old thing so I figured why not? I had someone find me a pair of scissors so I just started cutting. Matt helped for awhile and then my bridesmaid Chloe evened out the final look.

What do you think makes for a good, life long marriage?

The ability to take things as they come. We have not been married for very long, so we are no experts but I think that it’s a desire to be together and the ability to push each other to being better people that makes things last long term.

When planning your wedding what were your favorite places to look for inspiration?

My number one source of inspiration was Offbeatbride. I checked it pretty much daily to see cute centerpieces, adorable shoes, funky dresses, and everything in between. I actually bought several dresses off of modcloth after seeing their vendor posts. Offbeat bride was just a great place to see a different side of the typical wedding world.

Looking back is there anything you would have done differently?
I would have remembered to take the hair tie off my wrist! But really, I think that the day was perfect.

Flamenco Beach wedding on Culebra Island – Lyndsay & Marshall

Flamenco Beach wedding on Culebra Island – Lyndsay & Marshall

Lyndsay and Marshall have known each other since they were children. They have been lifelong sweet hearts and finally tied the knot on Culebra Island in Puerto Rico. I was so excited to have the chance to photograph their wedding on Flamenco Beach. Flamenco beach is ranked the third most beautiful beach in the world, it is always a pleasure to photograph weddings there. I asked Lyndsay a few questions about love, marriage and how she and Marshall met. Check out the photographs from their wedding day and her answers below.

What do you think makes for a good, life long marriage?

“Love isn’t finding someone you can live with, it’s finding someone you cannot live without.” Marshall and I have this quote hanging on the wall at the foot of our bed so that we see it every morning. Let’s be honest, we’re all human and are bound to get on each other’s nerves, but it’s never giving up on your spouse.. even on their worst days, if you are understanding and there for each other 100% of the time, you will live a good, lifelong marriage.

I loved all of the bridal details Lyndsay chose to wear on her wedding day. The starfish necklaces looked wonderful on her and her family members. The sparkling hairpiece was my favorite, it really dressed up her short lace beach wedding dress.

When did you and Marshall fist meet?

We went to the same middle school.. Marshall was two years older than me. We became best friends when I was in 6thgrade (2006) and started dating in 2007.

Marshall, the groom, enjoying a quiet moment before heading to the beach for the wedding.

What was your favorite thing about your wedding day?

My favorite thing about our wedding was when I first stepped foot into the sand and laid eyes on the amazing set up that Peri had created for us. Seeing Marshall standing under the coral and white pergola just gave me goose bumps.. This is really happening..

Apparently, there was a bad storm the night before that ruined the pergola and she had to completely redo everything minutes before the ceremony. I thought oh well… no matter what it looks like I will be Mrs. Marshall Olson today. Once I saw how beautiful it was I couldn’t even believe Peri was fussing around. It was an absolutely magical sight that we will never forget.

How did he ‘pop’ the question?

December 30, 2013 we were curled up on the couch watching TV and I told him we needed to go get balloons because the 31st is my little sister’s birthday.. I had to freshen up before we could go and he went out to start the truck. When I came out to put my shoes on.. BAM there he was on one knee.. I was so surprised I didn’t know how to react but start crying and shake my head yes. When we first starting talking about marriage, I said I didn’t want a fancy proposal.. this couldn’t have been more fitting for us. So casual and I wasn’t suspicious at all!

What are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?

When I think about spending the rest of my life with Marshall, it excites me to no end to think about the precious little family we will eventually make. Step by step we are slowly molding our lives around the children that we hope to have and cherish in the future.

Why did you choose a destination wedding on Culebra Island in Puerto Rico?

We chose a destination wedding because we are in no way “traditional”. I could not see myself in a big white gown at a church. Plus, we both have very large families are we did not want a huge wedding. By choosing a destination we were able to keep it down to 9 guests, which made it so much more intimate.

Lyndsay_Marshal_Culebra_Wedding_Photographer_Puerto_Rico_Blog-13

We chose Culebra as our destination because my family and I had been visiting Culebra since I was three years old!! One vacation, I was maybe 8 or 9 years old, my dad and I were walking to the tank at flamenco and I looked up and said “daddy, one day I will get married on this beach.” We consider it our home away from home. When Marshall and I had been dating for 1 year, my parents allowed him to come along on our family vacation.. that was six years ago and he loves it as much as us!! Flamenco beach is very special to our family, and now that we tied the knot there, it gives us all the more reason to visit every January… for our anniversary!

What advice do you have for brides having professional pictures taken for the first time?

With all the chaos of the wedding planning.. don’t forget to take some time to talk with your photographer and look at different wedding poses that you may want..  I did not take much time to look at different poses, but I had talked to Frances multiple times and explained that I had no clue what kind of pictures I was looking for.. I left my picture faith in her hands.. She did an absolutely wonderful job in capturing the most beautiful moments..  I basically left all of the thinking to her and was not disappointed!

Where was your first date?
We met at a mutual friend’s birthday party and then ran back into each other at Bern’s Wine Fest a few weeks later.

How did he ‘pop’ the question?

We took the boat out to Egmont Key. The weather was absolutely perfect! We pulled the boat up to the beautiful empty beach for a picnic. Bill even snuck a bottle of Dom Perignon Rose Champagne in the picnic basket! He got down on one knee and proposed on the beach. That night, we had dinner at Bern’s Steakhouse with 4 close friends. Bill had pre-arranged to drink a bottle of wine from each of our birth years. It was perfect!

What made you choose Puerto Rico as a place to have your engagement photographs done? What was your favorite part of your trip in Puerto Rico?

We had taken a vacation to Puerto Rico the year before and had a great time. It’s such a beautiful place and a happy memory for us, so it was the perfect place to take our engagement photos. It’s hard to pick a favorite part of the trip. We had a great time diving, but just relaxing and spending time together was amazing too.

What are you most excited about when you think about spending the rest of your life with your partner?
I get to spend every day with my best friend. What could be more exciting than that?!?

Brooke and Trevor – Tres Palmas Wedding Rincon Puerto Rico

Brooke and Trevor – Tres Palmas Wedding Rincon Puerto Rico

Brooke and Trevor tied the knot during a romantic beach wedding at Tres Palmas Guest house in Rincon Puerto Rico. Their intimate ceremony was attended by close friends and family. Brooks two daughters were lovely flower girls and a close family friend married them. I absolutely love photographing these smaller weddings because I feel like I really have a chance to connect with the Bride and Groom and their family and friends.

Scott and Colleen – Villa Cofresi – Rincon Wedding

Scott and Colleen – Villa Cofresi – Rincon Wedding

Scott and Colleen were married at the beautiful and tropical Villa Cofresi Resort and Hotel, in Rincon, Puerto Rico this past October. Everything about this wedding said Tropical fun! Her fantastic hand beaded bouquet as well as all the tropical seashells, and colorful touches made for a playful and romantic celebration. I absolutely loved the hawaiian t-shirts and tropical flowers. The whimsical murals on the walls at Villa Cofresi made great back drops for some of our pre ceremony pictures. The couple was also blessed with a gorgeous sunset that made for fantastic photographs as well.

My first Same Sex Wedding LGBT friendly Wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

My first Same Sex Wedding LGBT friendly Wedding photographer in Puerto Rico

Wow! It seems like it was only yesterday I was standing on the beautiful white sand beaches of Culebra Island with Jett and Chelsea before their beautiful destination wedding in Puerto Rico. It was my first time on the island of Culebra, a beautiful remote island off the east coast of Puerto Rico. It is only accessible by small 8 seater plans and a ferry. The population of permanent residents is about 1500 so its a very small community. The beach where the wedding was held was Flamenco Beach ranked #3 in the world! Of course it made a beautiful back drop for beach wedding photography.

Jett and Chelsea’s wedding was my first Same Sex wedding. I’ve been doing wedding photography on the island for over 5 years now so I think its about time. Their destination wedding on culebra island was intimate with just close friends and family. They had beautiful tropical decorations. The wedding was catered and organized by the amazing folks at Homeless Dog Cafe, I can’t recommend them enough!

Check out some of my other wedding photography here.

When the local magazine in Rincon el Coqui of Rincon (www.elcoquiofrincon.com) contacted me for photographs of Ryan Wykoff for their April 2014 issue I jumped at the opportunity. Ryan is a Rincon local that literally makes a living flying on the ocean. Starting the first and only Kiteboarding school in Rincon, Ryan teaches others how to fly and shares the magic of the ocean with locals and tourists alike.  These are the images we created during our Sandy Beach photo-shoot. Drunk in Love – Sexy Beach Portrait Photography, Rincon, Puerto Rico

Drunk in Love – Sexy Beach Portrait Photography, Rincon, Puerto Rico

Stephanie  came to Rincon, to escape the cold winter in New York. We had some conversations and a few drinks before we decided to hit the sand for a spur of the moment photoshoot. I’d watched Beyonces video ‘Drunk in Love’ and was mesmerized by the black and white images on the beach. I wanted to capture a little bit of that sexy mysterious vibe during my photoshoot with Stephanie. The sun had just gone down on the beach here in Rincon, so I pulled out my Alien Bee strobe to light these portraits. Beach photography can be a lot fun, especially if the subject is willing to get a little wet and sandy and really interact with the environment. Lucky for me I’m a photographer in Rincon, Puerto Rico where the water is always warm and inviting. The camera has magic, it gives us permission to be inspired and truly expressive, in ways we might not ordinarily allow ourselves to be.

Check out some of my other beach portrait photography.
