During last nights fourth of July wedding I was graciously offered a piece of the wedding cake. I am often offered cake at the weddings I photograph. On a rare occasion I may choose to indulge in piece of cake but for the most part I decline. This got me thinking about why I don’t usually accept cake at weddings so I came up with “The 5 reasons why if I’m your wedding photographer I shouldn’t eat your cake”….
The delicious cake from last nights fourth of July wedding. Photographed but not consumed by Rincon Images wedding photography 🙂
Sticky Fingers
I can’t have all that sugary frosting on my hands while I’m trying to operate my top of the line DSLR to capture the magical moments of your reception.
Guests having fun on the light up dance floor covering the outdoor pool just after the cake was cut.
Weekly dessert budget..
If I ate cake every Saturday that would put me waaaay over my desserts budget for the week… and sometimes I really like icecream on Sunday during Game of Thrones.
This wedding cake was almost too beautiful to cut! The soft pink colors and the beautiful flowers made it look just as great as I’m sure it tasted. 😉
To cake or not to cake
I’m really more of an ice cream girl anyway… sometimes I’ll eat cheesecake but I’m not sure if that’s even considered cake or not.
This bride had cream and cake for her wedding! Too fun! The cream was the perfect refreshing treat for a summer wedding in Puerto Rico.
Sugar High
About 5 – 15 minutes after your cake has been cut and served all of your guests will be experiencing an extreme sugar rush. Combined with the champagne from the toasts this makes for an extreme spike in activity that I need to be level headed enough to capture on film at a moments notice.
This bride and groom didn’t hold back at all after the wedding cake was cut. Frosting and cake flying everywhere! I must admit this was a great moment to photograph.
Quite honestly, I really enjoyed the steak dinner you were so generous to share with me and I could probably go for a second helping of that instead… does anyone in the kitchen have a hidden bottle of A1?
*** none of the wedding cakes pictured here were harmed by me in the making of this post. Just photographed and immortalized forever.
I also have a Wedding Cake Pinterest Board dedicated entirely to the amazing cakes I have photographed at different weddings.
I first started experimenting with double exposures a few years ago and now I’m hooked!
I love image manipulation and creating digital art in Photoshop, but I also really enjoy capturing a distorted image right in my camera. There is something really pure about creating a really amazing distorted image without using computer software. This technique involves setting the camera to capture two images within the same frame. In the days of film photography you just wouldn’t have wound the film over, today there is a special setting on the digital cameras that allows you to do more than one exposure in a frame. I usually start with a silhouette image and then look for a fun texture in the environment near me to fill in the details.
Double exposures add fun to a photo session and also help to tell the clients story a little better. For ocean lovers, images of the beach and the sea merged into their portraits are perfect for adding some magic to the final collection of photographs. I absolutely love taking a few of these and then getting to show them to my clients on the back of my camera, it always makes people smile!
Just a couple of palm trees blowing in the breeze. This double exposure photograph was taken on Barrero Beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico.Water is always a great subject for photographs. The way it reflects like and the amazing shapes it creates are always so ingesting visually. This double exposure is extra special because this couple really loves the ocean, so the photograph describes them perfectly. When making double exposure photographs it is important to experiment with the orientation of the camera. This particular photograph was made by combining a vertical image and a horizontal image.Bubbles and sea foam! The size relationship of the two frames combined here is what makes this image interesting. The tiny sea foam bubbles look larger than life agains the silhouette of the couple on the beach.
Cory and Steven tied the knot in the beautiful state of Colorado before heading down to Rincon, Puerto Rico for an amazing party with their family and friends. They chose the beautiful seaside venue 8th and Ocean as the location for their party. We had a chance to do some photographs on the beach and in a nearby bougainvillea garden before heading back to the party. These are their wedding photographs and a Q&A with the Groom and Groom.
Cory and Steven were a little nervous about having their picture taken at first. After a few different poses they relaxed and really opened up on camera.
When did the two of you first meet?
Cory – Thanks to the marvels of technology, Steven came across an old Yahoo personals page that I had honestly forgotten all about. I was working one day when I received an email and then we proceeded to IM daily until we were ready to meet for the first time.
Steven – 10 years ago, I was 22 and new to the dating scene. I was living and working in a small town more than an hour south of Houston. Knowing that it would be nearly impossible to find and connect with a like minded individual in my little conservative Texas town, I took to the Internet to explore the newly created World of online dating. I stumbled across Cory’s profile picture and although our profiles didn’t “match up”, I saw this lively individual that I knew could open my eyes and introduce me to a life in which I could be true to myself.
This LGBT couple looked so handsome in front of the sea grape tree leaves. This beautiful backdrop was just steps away from their seaside venue.Cory and Steven steal a little kiss in the shade of this sea grape tree during our gay wedding photography session in Rincon, Puerto Rico.Best friends and partners for life! Cory and Steven are now a happily married couple. I took this playful wedding photograph with my fish eye lens.
Tell us about your first date…
Cory – Steven joined me and about 8 other friends of mine at a Buffalo Wild Wings for cheap chicken drumsticks and tall glasses of beer. He was in real estate then and showed up in his khaki pants and short sleeve button down shirt. I thought he was adorable. We hit it off great and everyone thought he was just the cutest. At 22 then, he was definitely the youngest at the table. We had a great first date and then just a few days later, he joined me at a wild house party. We’ve been attached at the hip every day since…for the last 10 years!
Steven – I was having a tough day at the office when an elderly coworker of mine offered to set me up with her granddaughter. I politely declined and immediately contacted Cory to see if he would be available to meet me that evening for a much needed drink. He extended an invite to meet him and a “few friends” for wings and beer at a sports bar in the city. Being an introverted and shy country boy who had never been on a date with another man, I was shocked to hear myself respond with “I’ll be there in just over an hour.” The shock continued when I walked through the restaurant doors and was greeted by an overwhelming group 8 of Cory’s closest friends. Though not a typical date, it was the perfect first date for me. I was hooked once I saw the love and compassion that all at the table had for each other.

When did you know you were in love?
Cory – My love for Steven grew and developed into something greater than I ever knew possible. Every single day our love for each other has become bigger and bigger. I literally fall in love with him every single day.
Steven – it’s hard to pinpoint the exact moment I fell in love. There was a type of love that I had felt even before we had met in person. Then there was a new love and connection on our first date. It must have been love at first sight for me, because the next week I was driving an hour and fifteen minutes to be with him everyday after work and then waking up and driving another hour and fifteen minutes back every morning.
True love is a big smile and a long hug! This couple was so great to work with. I love photographing couples when I can see they are truly in love.I love the expression on Cory’s face in this photograph! The two of them were so genuinely happy on their special day.Together forever. The two grooms make the infinity symbol with their hands. I love this photograph, its a cute variation on the traditional heart.
Who popped the question and how did it happen?
Cory – Steven and I, along with our close friend Sara, all rented a little house on a river out in the Texas hill country for a weekend. Sara was expecting her first daughter soon and wanted to shop at some local outlet stores for baby furniture. Before we left for an afternoon of shopping, Steven and I walked down to the river. There was a long, and very skinny bridge of sorts that we were standing on at the edge of the water. I wanted to get on one knee, but knowing how clumsy I am, I surely would’ve fallen in the water and definitely would’ve dropped the ring! I asked Steven if he had any plans for the rest of his life and asked if he would marry me. Naturally, he said yes! He was so surprised!
Steven – We had rented a rustic cabin on a river in the Texas hill country for a weekend to celebrate my birthday. My grandmother had just passed away a couple weeks earlier and we weren’t sure whether we were up for a vacation. Cory convinced me that the trip was just the type of relaxation the we needed to cope with the loss. The morning of his proposal I could definitely feel his excitement and anxiety, but I had no idea what for. He walked me to the end of a rickety pier that extended over the San Marcus river, took my hands, and asked me if I had plans for the rest of my life and would I marry him. Of course I said yes.

Cory, what are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?
There are so many things to be excited about that it’s hard to choose just one! In the last 10 years, we’ve put together such a great and happy family. We have our fur babies (2 dogs, 2 cats…and our turtle) and we have each other. I love coming home to that. I’m so excited about what our future holds. We’ve had plenty of challenges like any couple would and we just keep getting stronger, together.
Steven, what are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?
Everyday is a new adventure. I couldn’t ask for a better companion to experience all the thrills that life has to offer. I look forward to strengthening our bond more and more and continuing to learn and grow from each other.
Cory and steven walking towards the ocean together.
Cory, what does true love mean to you?
True love, for me, means having that one special person that sees you. Really sees you, with your strengths and your faults and continues to love you unconditionally. They push you to be the best of version of yourself that you can be. Steven has made me a better person. I never knew that love could be this way. I absolutely love every minute of it.
Steven, what does true love mean to you?
True love is knowing that there will always be someone standing in my corner of the ring, cheering me on through life. We will always and forever be there for each other, no matter what life may throw at us. We are better people thanks to each other.
Cory and Steven in the seaside bougainvillea garden by their LGBT wedding celebration in Rincon, Puerto Rico.
Why did you choose to have your wedding celebration in Puerto Rico?
Cory- We had vacationed in Puerto Rico a few years back on the east end of the island in Luquillo. It was breathtaking! We knew we had to come back again!
Steven- I have a personal connection and love of Puerto Rico. My grandfather worked for Pan American Airlines and he and my grandmother raised my father and 2 aunts in Puerto Rico and Panama. I grew up hearing stories of my dad diving for lobster and fishing with my grandfather for dinner… Iguanas chasing them out from under the car they were working on together. I wanted to pay tribute to my grandmothers lavish weekly dinners and dancing on the rooftop terrace my grandfather built overlooking San Juan.
What is your favorite memory from your trip to Puerto Rico?
Cory-The best part of the entire trip was seeing how amazed all of our friends and family were from vacationing there. We continue to hear how thankful everyone is for inviting them and giving them one of the best and most memorable vacations they’ve ever had!
Steven- watching most of our guests experience Puerto Rico for the first time was priceless. The comments on how friendly the locals are, how stunning the beaches are, how amazing the food is… I will never forget this trip!
How did you find Rincon Images?
Thanks to Wilson Rios, he and the owner of the villa at 8th and Ocean, had Rincon Images listed as a direct referral for outstanding photography. We browsed through your fun photos and knew that you were a good fit. We’re so happy that we were able to capture our perfect day this way!
Why did you choose 8th and Ocean as your venue?
Cory- Little known fact about Steven…the man can research! He spent quite some time looking all over the island for the perfect location for our trip and it needed to house a lot of people! After some searching, he found Rincon. There were only a few locations in the area that could hold our guest list and 8th and Ocean was perfect for our needs.
Steven- I fell in love with the location of the 8th & Ocean and instantly knew that our reception was meant to be held on their back veranda. I wanted a beachfront venue that would allow everyone to relax and feel as if they were at their own private Caribbean villa. I wanted our guests to see a side of Puerto Rico that they would not normally be exposed to. Many in our group thought I was crazy for asking them to drive several hours away from San Juan, but I wanted to see and share with them what Puerto Rico means to me.
What was your favorite thing about your party in Puerto Rico?
Cory- The ENTIRE reception! It was absolutely perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better guest list. The staff was superb. The DJ was awesome! Food and drinks, outstanding. We set the bar pretty high that night!
Steven- watching so many people that we love and appreciate fall in love with the island life that Puerto Rico offers. Dancing to Latin music, eating amazing island food, rum drinks in hand. I believe our guests will always remember how easy it was to slip in to the island way of life the night of our reception.
Tell us a little bit about what you did after the party, did you take any special day trips or explore any beautiful places?
Cory-To be honest, we were pretty busy from start to finish. Our favorite was our trip to La Parguera. We took a snorkeling trip and had such an amazing time! Afterwards, we finished with a trip to the bioluminescent bay. Incredible! Everyone was blown away! Steven- we had brunch at a little inn on Sandy Beach while watching several professional surfers, then laughed as 2 of our group attempted to tackle the waves. Several of our guests went on a half day fishing excursion and brought back tuna that we grilled up that night for everyone. A few zip lined, repelled, and hiked the caves while others of us toured the light house in Rincon and ventured out to the waterfall. We ended our trip with all of our guests snorkeling in la parguera and enjoying a memorable sparkling swim in the bio bay that evening.
What do you think makes for a good, life long marriage?
Communication and patience. Knowing that everyday won’t be a honeymoon and to take advantage of the little things in life. Let each other know daily how much they mean to you and let the love continue to grow and evolve.
What about your wedding party was unique and different?
We didn’t really have a traditional wedding party. We kept it, for the most part, a bit more untraditional. We really just wanted a big, catered party! Every person at our reception brought their own distinct personality and together it turned out better than we could’ve ever imagined.
Steven- we skipped many of the typical wedding traditions… The first dance, cake cutting, best man speech, etc. Our reception was more of a celebration of the joining of our family and friends rather than a celebration of just us. There were no stresses of worrying what music needs to be played when, or what time should dinner be served. We allowed the night to flow on it’s own and everything happened exactly the way we had wanted.
What advice do you have for brides and grooms having professional pictures taken for the first time?
Relax! I was a little shy at first about the whole experience. It was our first professional photography session. But after a little time, and with the coaching from Frances, it worked out just fine!
As an LGBT couple did you experience any discrimination while planning your event? Do you have any advice for LGBT friendly wedding vendors?
We actually didn’t experience any discrimination. Everyone was extremely helpful through the entire process. We did make sure that all of our vendors knew that we were a same sex couple up front, just to make sure we wouldn’t come across any issues at our event. That didn’t seem to phase any one we worked with.
When planning your wedding party what were your favorite places to look for inspiration? (you had so many fun details, I loved the insta-camera! Who came up with that idea?)
Cory-Steven handled the majority of details when it came to the planning. He wanted to make sure that we kept with the beach motif, but also to keep things simple. And lighting was key for the dinner table!
Steven- Pinterest, of course, was a go to for great ideas! I wanted something more memorable than just a guest book for everyone to sign and I thought a scrapbook of sorts would be a great idea. With a little help from Pinterest, I fell in love with the idea of taking instant photos and having our guests write personal messages to commemorate the evening. I also wanted a few momentos that people could take home, so we decorated frames with shells for each guests instant photo along with personalized do not disturb door hangers.
Looking back is there anything you would have done differently?
Absolutely not a single detail would’ve been changed. It was simply perfect.
Is there any party of your day that you wouldn’t change for the world?
We feel truly blessed that everything went so perfectly. We couldn’t have asked for a better event, location, weather, group of people, or better vendors who we now consider to be friends. Many thanks and much love to all who were involved!
Jerod dips his bride to be on the romantic cobble stone streets of Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico.
When did you and your fiancé first meet?
Jerod and I met about 6 years ago. He did some training for a few months in one of the clinics I worked
in before transferring into the operations department. We both work in healthcare administration. We
both shared that passion for working for the underserved community. We would see each other a few
times a year and developed a friendship. Since then we no longer work for the same company, but
similar companies. We both work for health centers to serve the uninsured, low income part of the
community, adults and pediatrics.
This couple had a blast during their Viejo San Juan photography session. I love using this particular street in San Juan, Puerto Rico to photograph wedding and engagement sessions, it has beautiful colored buildings and almost no cars.Gorgeous photograph of the couple in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico. The cobble stone streets and shoes look beautiful in this photograph.I absolutely loved the colorful shoes that Heather was wearing for our photography session in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tropical colors looked fabulous next to the cobble stone streets. It really is all about the details!I love using this banyan tree in photographs. It is a great location right on Paseo de la Princesa. The tall tree provides lots of shade to keep things cool, and the long branches make beautiful patterns of light on the ground. Its a great spot for wedding and engagement photography in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Tell us about your first date…
Our first date was at the yummy Mexican restaurant, that we go back to ALL the time. It was then
followed by a movie. Typical date! We watched the movie Ted and we laughed so much together. I think
we even ended it with ice cream for dessert. We literally repeat this date all the time. Dinner, movie, ice
cream.
This photograph was taken right in front of the red doors on Paseo de la Princesa in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico. This kind of architectural detailing is iconic of Viejo San Juan, and is perfect for wedding and engagement photography sessions.Natural light can really make for fabulous photographs. Knowing where to be at what time of day is what made the beautiful light in this photograph possible. I love photographing new locations, but getting to know a particular area makes it really easy to nail certain shots.
How did he ‘pop’ the question?
Jerod had taken me to look at rings a few weeks before he proposed. Actually I think it was about 2
months. I already knew we would be together forever so I knew it was coming. I would think to myself I
wonder how hes going to do it. I am very vigilant and would probably figure it out. So he did it when I
least expected it. I was in the middle of an ab workout when he popped the question! Let’s just say I was
definitely surprised and not expecting it at all!
I love using natural elements when doing wedding photography. The rich lush green color of this aloe plant really makes the purple hues in the amethyst ring pop.
I love the photograph I took of your ring, can you tell me what its made of and where it came from?
My ring is one of a kind. I knew I always liked color and I am not too into silver or white gold, although it
is pretty. When Jerod took me to look “just in case” he asked me “If I could have whatever I want, what
would it be?”. I chose a 14k rose gold band with diamonds on the side and around the middle stone. The
middle stone is a pink amethyst stone. When I told the lady at the store what I wanted, she was a bit
puzzled, since every girl is supposed to want a huge diamond. Well, not me. I like simple, elegant, yet
pretty things. What she put together was just what I envisioned. Thanks to Jennifer at Diamonds Direct
in Austin for making my dream ring come true!
I love using a lens flare in this kind of location, it really adds to the romantic sunset mood. This particular location in Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico is on Calle Norzagary. My off camera flash made this moody El Morro photograph possible. Having a variety of techniques and a selection of photography equipment makes it easy to have fun at any location any time of day.
What are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?
We are excited for the laughter, peace and love that we will have with each other. Jerod and I do truly
like spending time together. We haven’t gotten into that phase yet where we need our own space and
get annoyed at each other when we spend to much time together, hopefully that day doesn’t come. We
are excited to start a family. We have talked about adopting because there are so many children in this
world that need a stable home! And we are excited for more traveling together!
This was the last spot we stopped during Heather and Jerods engagement photography session. I’m so happy they were up for just a few more photographs. When the sun goes down in Viejo San Juan the city lights come up and make for wonderful photographs.
Jill contacted me last summer about photographing her intimate wedding in Rincon. We talked on the phone for a bit about different ideas for places to do wedding photographs. I was so happy when I realized she was a hula hooper! I am an avid hula hooper myself and have several LED hula hoops. After the wedding ceremony my assistant and I went back to the villa with them and made some great LED hula hoop photographs. This intimate wedding was a lot of fun to photograph, great people, good times and lots of smiles. They even read from a Dr. Seuss book as part of their ceremony!
Check out Jill’s Q&A:
Tell us about your first date…
Our first date was to see Toy Story 3. It was great because the theater was empty and so we were able to talk through the whole movie.

Why did you choose the Barefoot Bodega as your venue?
I had seen pictures on the website and I thought that it would be a very peaceful and serene setting for us to be married in.

The studio is located right next to the ocean and is shaded by tall sea grape trees. It is a very tranquil and beautiful venue for an intimate wedding.
How did he ‘pop’ the question?
We were on a sunset cruise off the coast of Rincon sitting on the front of the boat. He asked, I said yes, and we cheers-ed. 🙂
The bride and groom 🙂
What about your wedding was unique and different?
Well the ceremony was something that I wrote, I looked through a lot of scripts and I didn’t feel like any of them really matched us, so that was crafted from scratch. We didn’t have any sort of traditional processional or a unity ceremony or anything you typically see.
We did a reading from Dr. Suess, a short prayer, said our vows and were on our way. We wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet.
We also did not have a typical reception.
We wanted our wedding day to feel like, our day. I have been to several weddings where I hear the bride and groom talking about how the wedding is for the family and the marriage is for the couple; and I really wanted to avoid that sort of feeling. We tried to focus on who we are, what we like, and what we wanted to do. We played with hoops and listened to music, we eat and drank and danced. It really was just an enjoyable evening and a fun night.
The whole wedding day really did feel stress free and fun because of that focus on keeping things down to earth, and us.
Jill’s bridesmaid Chloe reading Dr. Seuss during the ceremony. This was a really light playful story with a great message.
I love the photograph I took of your ring, can you tell me what its made of and where it came from?
The center ring is made out of white gold and the bands are made of rose gold; they both also have diamonds are are from Zale’s.
Jills beautiful wedding ring. I love the vintage style of this wedding ring.Jill with her Hula Hoops on the beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico!
What are you most excited about when you think of spending the rest of your life with your partner?
I am excited for our future adventures. We both love to travel and we want to see the world and I’m really excited to do and see as much as we can.
Goofing around on the beach after the ceremony, the bride makes a funny face.
Why did you choose a destination wedding in Puerto Rico?
We really love Puerto Rico, we went last year and fell in love with Rincons’ whole atmosphere, it is where he proposed. Once we decided we wanted to do something destination, Puerto Rico just made sense.
Feeling free! Jill takes the plunge after her wedding for some fun ocean pics.
What is your favorite memory from your trip to Puerto Rico?
I have a lot of favorite memories from the trip but I really enjoyed doing yoga at the Barefoot Bodega. The day before the wedding we had a private class there and it was just a really great way to relax and take a deep breath before the big day.
Jill hula hooping on the beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico after her destination wedding. This was a lot of fun to photograph!
Why did you choose Rincon Images photography? How did you find us?
I really liked the work on your website peculiarly the “& More” section.
I had seen pictures on the website and I thought that it would be a very peaceful and serene setting for us to be married in.
What was your favorite thing about your wedding day?
My favorite thing about the wedding day was just hanging out at the villa at the end of the day. Hooping, music, talking, hanging out, eating, it was just a really fun and relaxed night. We really wanted our wedding day to feel genuine to our every day lives, our number one goal was to keep things simple and as relaxed as possible and I think that we achieved that goal.
The bride and groom on the beach with their friends after the ceremony. A nice simple, fun wedding with great people.Jill doing her thing on the beach, rocking that hula hoop! I love it that the sun is right behind her in this photograph, it look so magical.
What was your favorite detail from your wedding day, dress, shoes,
flowers..?
My favorite detail was the backdrop for the ceremony. It was our only actual decoration and I’m really glad that it stood out.
Jill’s streamer backdrop was simple and beautiful. I loved the combination of lace, silk, and sequined streamers.
Tell us a little bit about what you did after the ceremony.. dinner, dancing?
After the ceremony we walked around on the beach, stopped by the bar for a shot, and then we went back to the villa we were staying. We spent the evening eating skewers and flan, listening to music, hooping, and relaxing.
What advice do you have for brides having professional pictures taken for the first time?
Hire Frances! No one in our whole group has ever taken professional photos before and so no one really knew what to expect for the picture portion of the day, and honestly we were kind of dreading it. We were expecting to be asked to stand in a line doing the same things over and over and that’s not at all what happened. I really liked how you were able to guide us and make us feel really comfortable throughout the whole day while allowing us to keep our identity.
How many dresses did you try on before you settled on the one you wore for your wedding day. Where did you find it?
I actually purchased two previous dresses, when I bought my first dress we were planning on a big family wedding, and so when we scratched that idea I also canceled the first dress.
I then bought a tea length dress, but between the time I bought the dress and around the time of the wedding I went from a size 14 to a size 6, and the estimates for the alterations were more than what I paid for the dress.
The dress I ended up wearing; I bought about a month before the wedding.
How did you get the idea to cut your wedding dress so you could hoop in it? I loved that idea!
When we were on the beach, I was trying to hoop in the dress and the tool kept catching under my feet and tripping me. I knew that the dress wasn’t going to be worn again and I didn’t want to go just put on any old thing so I figured why not? I had someone find me a pair of scissors so I just started cutting. Matt helped for awhile and then my bridesmaid Chloe evened out the final look.
The bride hula hooping with an LED hula hoop after the wedding.Jill cut off the bottom of her wedding dress so she could hula hoop in it after the wedding. Such a great idea!
What do you think makes for a good, life long marriage?
The ability to take things as they come. We have not been married for very long, so we are no experts but I think that it’s a desire to be together and the ability to push each other to being better people that makes things last long term.
The couple decorated their table with DIY painted bottles and small led tea light candles. The look was very tropical and bohemian. The bride and groom pouring champagne to celebrate their wedding! My assistant and I brought the champagne, its important to have fun with clients, especially at the end of the night 🙂
When planning your wedding what were your favorite places to look for inspiration?
My number one source of inspiration was Offbeatbride. I checked it pretty much daily to see cute centerpieces, adorable shoes, funky dresses, and everything in between. I actually bought several dresses off of modcloth after seeing their vendor posts. Offbeat bride was just a great place to see a different side of the typical wedding world.
Looking back is there anything you would have done differently?
I would have remembered to take the hair tie off my wrist! But really, I think that the day was perfect.
This time last year I was packing my gear for the most amazing destination and all around adventure I had ever been on. I was flying out to Las Vegas, Nevada to photograph Anastacia and Trevors off-beat, Valentines day, western themed, Vegas wedding in the Valley of Fire. My assistant was my long time friend Katie Crisman. We had worked together on several jobs while we were in College together in south Florida. I couldn’t think of a better person to help me with this zany couple.
Anastacia is a costume and set designer so all of her western themed decorations were hand made. The DIY details included her crochet wedding dress, bouquet and of course western themed Valentines day goodie bags for all her guests.
I photographed the wedding using my infrared camera and a special prism lens. The result was a trippy collection of wedding photographs. They brought their cats with them to hang out in their swanky Vegas hotel room that they had decorated with all western themed items.
I had a blast following this amazing bunch of people all around Vegas and the Valley of Fire snapping photographs.

A few weeks ago Drew called me up to discuss having some photography done to celebrate his marriage to Oh. They had had a civil ceremony back in the states but wanted something extra special to commemorate to occasion. We talked a little bit about ideas and locations and settled on Pools Beach and Steps beach. When we arrived at Pools we had the beach to ourselves. It was just the three of us there with the sun and sand and sea as the only other witnesses. Drew and Oh had both written out their vows on cards that they had in special red envelopes. I took photos as they recited their vows to each other. We were all moved to tears that then became smiles. It was the simplest and most romantic ceremony I have ever photographed. I felt honored that they selected me to be there and share the space with them.
After that we went over to Steps beach, one of Drew and Ohs favorite beaches they had discovered while they were here. We got to play around a bit on the beach, jumping and making funny faces. The photo session was a lot of fun and ended with a gorgeous red and orange sunset. I wish Drew and Oh all the best as they start their lives together.

Brooke and Trevor tied the knot during a romantic beach wedding at Tres Palmas Guest house in Rincon Puerto Rico. Their intimate ceremony was attended by close friends and family. Brooks two daughters were lovely flower girls and a close family friend married them. Scott and Colleen were married at the beautiful and tropical Villa Cofresi Resort and Hotel, in Rincon, Puerto Rico this past October. Everything about this wedding said Tropical fun! Her fantastic hand beaded bouquet as well as all the tropical seashells, and colorful touches made for a playful and romantic celebration. I absolutely loved the hawaiian t-shirts and tropical flowers. The whimsical murals on the walls at Villa Cofresi made great back drops for some of our pre ceremony pictures. The couple was also blessed with a gorgeous sunset that made for fantastic photographs as well.

I’m really a portrait photographer at heart, that’s why I love photographing weddings so much. There are only a few occasions in a persons life when they get to have their portrait taken professionally and weddings are one of those occasions. Over the course of the wedding day there are lots of different moments for pictures and different kinds of portraits. My favorite time with a bride is right before the ceremony just after she’s put her dress on. Her make up is fresh, and she is usually surrounded by her closest female friends and family, so it’s a very supportive environment. There is a lot of anticipation and excitement. I shot these photographs of Brooke before her wedding in Rincon. The light on the balcony was perfect. There are always lots of colorful photographs during tropical beach weddings but I chose to edit these in high contrast black and white.
These photographs were shot on the balcony of Pelican Point at Sandy Beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico.
