Creative double exposure portrait photography – Photographer Rincon, Puerto Rico

I first started experimenting with double exposures a few years ago and now I’m hooked!

I love image manipulation and creating digital art in Photoshop, but I also really enjoy capturing a distorted image right in my camera. There is something really pure about creating a really amazing distorted image without using computer software. This technique involves setting the camera to capture two images within the same frame. In the days of film photography you just wouldn’t have wound the film over, today there is a special setting on the digital cameras that allows you to do more than one exposure in a frame. I usually start with a silhouette image and then look for a fun texture in the environment near me to fill in the details.

Double exposures add fun to a photo session and also help to tell the clients story a little better. For ocean lovers, images of the beach and the sea merged into their portraits are perfect for adding some magic to the final collection of photographs. I absolutely love taking a few of these and then getting to show them to my clients on the back of my camera, it always makes people smile!

Water is always a great subject for photographs. The way it reflects like and the amazing shapes it creates are always so ingesting visually. This double exposure is extra special because this couple really loves the ocean, so the photograph describes them perfectly. Photograph by Rincon Images wedding photographer Puerto Rico.

Brooke and Trevor – Tres Palmas Wedding Rincon Puerto Rico

Brooke and Trevor tied the knot during a romantic beach wedding at Tres Palmas Guest house in Rincon Puerto Rico. Their intimate ceremony was attended by close friends and family. Brooks two daughters were lovely flower girls and a close family friend married them. I absolutely love photographing these smaller weddings because I feel like I really have a chance to connect with the Bride and Groom and their family and friends.

Bridal Portraits -Wedding Photographer- Rincon Puerto Rico

I’m really a portrait photographer at heart, that’s why I love photographing weddings so much. There are only a few occasions in a persons life when they get to have their portrait taken professionally and weddings are one of those occasions. Over the course of the wedding day there are lots of different moments for pictures and different kinds of portraits. My favorite time with a bride is right before the ceremony just after she’s put her dress on. Her make up is fresh, and she is usually surrounded by her closest female friends and family, so it’s a very supportive environment. There is a lot of anticipation and excitement. I shot these photographs of Brooke before her wedding in Rincon. The light on the balcony was perfect. There are always lots of colorful photographs during tropical beach weddings but I chose to edit these in high contrast black and white.

These photographs were shot on the balcony of Pelican Point at Sandy Beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Creative Engagement Photography – Double Exposure & Infrared Photography at the Lighthouse – Rincon, Puerto Rico

Tamara and Jason met as correctional officers in the United States (Yes of course I had to ask her about Orange is the New Black!… and she told me that for the most part its pretty true to life), they were partnered together for self defense classes. We did this wonderful day before photoshoot at the Faro (lighthouse) here in Rincon. Their destination wedding was right down the beach from where we did this engagement style portrait session. I find that destination wedding photographers in puerto rico can sometimes get in a rut with coming up with creative portrait ideas since we are usually photographing on the beach. Using some creative photography tricks any place can become the perfect spot for portraits. Pre and Post photo sessions are great because there is extra time to spend focusing on making wonderful images, there also isn’t the pressure of a time line or other people around. During Tamara and Jason’s session I did some more creative photography; double exposures and I also used my infrared camera. Having the extra time and space as well as a couple who is up for making something beautiful is the best space to create amazing new pictures. I always highly highly recommend doing an additional portrait session as an add on to wedding photography. I tell my friends that most photographers will even do it at a discounted rate if they are already doing the photography for the wedding. Its always worth it and another chance to have fun in front of the camera… and if you doing a post wedding session it could be another opportunity to wear your dress!

Flour Power! High speed photography Creative Photography Portrait session

Flour Power! High speed photography Creative Photography Portrait session

Hey Hey! So I had the chance to have some fun last night with some friends and some flour in an abandoned building in Mayaguez. Beth runs a traveling art gallery out of her RV in the states and collects different kinds of animal bones to turn into jewelry and household items. I’d been dying to do some more highspeed photos and I was excited to try out the flour.

I think this technique would work really well as part of a second day photoshoot or ‘trash the dress’ session. The white flour won’t stain a white dress and the look is incredible. It would be a lot of fun the day after your wedding to go crazy throwing flour all over each other. I’ve even seem pictures done using colored powder and glitter mixtures…. the possibilities are endless.

Infrared Waterfall Creative Portrait Photography Session

Infrared Waterfall Creative Portrait Photography Session

This beautiful waterfall is just a few minutes north of Rincon and its a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. I hadn’t been up to these falls since I was in high school… seeing them brought back so many memories. Especially being on the trip with 19 year old Marina from western florida. She and her boyfriend were adventuring around the island and decided to take a trip to the falls. I watched as her boyfriend snap some photos of her and I could tell she wanted some more glamorous shots to commemorate her trip. I had my infrared camera on me and offered to take a few photographs. Infrared photography is a lot of fun and is a great way for me as a portrait photographer to add some creativity into a photo session. These are a few of the images I made of Marina that day.

When the local magazine in Rincon el Coqui of Rincon (www.elcoquiofrincon.com) contacted me for photographs of Ryan Wykoff for their April 2014 issue I jumped at the opportunity. Ryan is a Rincon local that literally makes a living flying on the ocean. Starting the first and only Kiteboarding school in Rincon, Ryan teaches others how to fly and shares the magic of the ocean with locals and tourists alike.  These are the images we created during our Sandy Beach photo-shoot. Drunk in Love – Sexy Beach Portrait Photography, Rincon, Puerto Rico

Drunk in Love – Sexy Beach Portrait Photography, Rincon, Puerto Rico

Stephanie  came to Rincon, to escape the cold winter in New York. We had some conversations and a few drinks before we decided to hit the sand for a spur of the moment photoshoot. I’d watched Beyonces video ‘Drunk in Love’ and was mesmerized by the black and white images on the beach. I wanted to capture a little bit of that sexy mysterious vibe during my photoshoot with Stephanie. The sun had just gone down on the beach here in Rincon, so I pulled out my Alien Bee strobe to light these portraits. Beach photography can be a lot fun, especially if the subject is willing to get a little wet and sandy and really interact with the environment. Lucky for me I’m a photographer in Rincon, Puerto Rico where the water is always warm and inviting. The camera has magic, it gives us permission to be inspired and truly expressive, in ways we might not ordinarily allow ourselves to be.

Check out some of my other beach portrait photography.
