Creative double exposure portrait photography – Photographer Rincon, Puerto Rico

Creative double exposure portrait photography – Photographer Rincon, Puerto Rico

I first started experimenting with double exposures a few years ago and now I’m hooked!

I love image manipulation and creating digital art in Photoshop, but I also really enjoy capturing a distorted image right in my camera. There is something really pure about creating a really amazing distorted image without using computer software. This technique involves setting the camera to capture two images within the same frame. In the days of film photography you just wouldn’t have wound the film over, today there is a special setting on the digital cameras that allows you to do more than one exposure in a frame. I usually start with a silhouette image and then look for a fun texture in the environment near me to fill in the details.

Double exposures add fun to a photo session and also help to tell the clients story a little better. For ocean lovers, images of the beach and the sea merged into their portraits are perfect for adding some magic to the final collection of photographs. I absolutely love taking a few of these and then getting to show them to my clients on the back of my camera, it always makes people smile!

Western Union – Las Vegas- Valentines day Destination Wedding

Western Union – Las Vegas- Valentines day Destination Wedding

This time last year I was packing my gear for the most amazing destination and all around adventure I had ever been on. I was flying out to Las Vegas, Nevada to photograph Anastacia and Trevors off-beat, Valentines day, western themed, Vegas wedding in the Valley of Fire. My assistant was my long time friend Katie Crisman. We had worked together on several jobs while we were in College together in south Florida. I couldn’t think of a better person to help me with this zany couple.

Anastacia is a costume and set designer so all of her western themed decorations were hand made. The DIY details included her crochet wedding dress, bouquet and of course western themed Valentines day goodie bags for all her guests.

I photographed the wedding using my infrared camera and a special prism lens. The result was a trippy collection of wedding photographs. They brought their cats with them to hang out in their swanky Vegas hotel room that they had decorated with all western themed items.

I had a blast following this amazing bunch of people all around Vegas and the Valley of Fire snapping photographs.

Long exposures and Creative Self Portraits – Viejo San Juan Roof Tops

Check out my portfolio 🙂
I spend most of my time by the sea on the west coast of Puerto Rico, soothing ocean waves and calm breezes. Every so often though, I get the chance to play in the big city. Trips to Viejo San Juan always help recharge my creative batteries. Its important especially as a photographer to give yourself a change of scenery from time to time, it helps keep the eye fresh. On this particular trip I stayed at Da House. A cute boutique hotel above the lively Newyorican Cafe.
The rooftop patio of the hotel is cozy and there is a hot tub. I opted against dragging my lighting equipment up the four flights of stairs to the roof and just used my tripod and a little bit of fill from my on camera flash.  I created a few images around the sky light above the stair case. Those tiles at the bottom of the stairs are quintessential Viejo San Juan tiles and the iron work is iconic of Viejo San Juan as well. The last picture is a long exposure of me playing with an LED hula hoop. I love hooping… after photography it really is the other great love of my life.  I like to use a similar technique when I’m doing wedding photography. I do long exposures during the reception to create trails of light around dancing guests.
Photograph lying above a skylight over a stair case. I love the staircases in viejo san juan… they can be troublesome if you have a lot of luggage but I love the character and old world feel they give to the buildings there.

Behind me you can see the lights of Viejo San Juan (Old San Juan). My skirt was blowing in the wind and because of the long exposure its blured.

Scott and Colleen – Villa Cofresi – Rincon Wedding

Scott and Colleen – Villa Cofresi – Rincon Wedding

Scott and Colleen were married at the beautiful and tropical Villa Cofresi Resort and Hotel, in Rincon, Puerto Rico this past October. Everything about this wedding said Tropical fun! Her fantastic hand beaded bouquet as well as all the tropical seashells, and colorful touches made for a playful and romantic celebration. I absolutely loved the hawaiian t-shirts and tropical flowers. The whimsical murals on the walls at Villa Cofresi made great back drops for some of our pre ceremony pictures. The couple was also blessed with a gorgeous sunset that made for fantastic photographs as well.

Bridal Portraits -Wedding Photographer- Rincon Puerto Rico

I’m really a portrait photographer at heart, that’s why I love photographing weddings so much. There are only a few occasions in a persons life when they get to have their portrait taken professionally and weddings are one of those occasions. Over the course of the wedding day there are lots of different moments for pictures and different kinds of portraits. My favorite time with a bride is right before the ceremony just after she’s put her dress on. Her make up is fresh, and she is usually surrounded by her closest female friends and family, so it’s a very supportive environment. There is a lot of anticipation and excitement. I shot these photographs of Brooke before her wedding in Rincon. The light on the balcony was perfect. There are always lots of colorful photographs during tropical beach weddings but I chose to edit these in high contrast black and white.

These photographs were shot on the balcony of Pelican Point at Sandy Beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

I love being a second photographer because you get to have all the fun of shooting without needing to edit an entire wedding collection. Yaah! productions asked me to be a second photographer for their wedding at Las Marias of course I said yes! I think my favorite part of the wedding was getting to photograph the bride eating ice-cream from her own ice-cream cart. Icecream must be one of the best options available for a tropical beach wedding in Puerto Rico.  The officiant for the service was Rev. Gregory Ruiz.

Creative Engagement Photography – Double Exposure & Infrared Photography at the Lighthouse – Rincon, Puerto Rico

Creative Engagement Photography – Double Exposure & Infrared Photography at the Lighthouse – Rincon, Puerto Rico

Tamara and Jason met as correctional officers in the United States (Yes of course I had to ask her about Orange is the New Black!… and she told me that for the most part its pretty true to life), they were partnered together for self defense classes. We did this wonderful day before photoshoot at the Faro (lighthouse) here in Rincon. Their destination wedding was right down the beach from where we did this engagement style portrait session. I find that destination wedding photographers in puerto rico can sometimes get in a rut with coming up with creative portrait ideas since we are usually photographing on the beach. Using some creative photography tricks any place can become the perfect spot for portraits. Pre and Post photo sessions are great because there is extra time to spend focusing on making wonderful images, there also isn’t the pressure of a time line or other people around. During Tamara and Jason’s session I did some more creative photography; double exposures and I also used my infrared camera. Having the extra time and space as well as a couple who is up for making something beautiful is the best space to create amazing new pictures. I always highly highly recommend doing an additional portrait session as an add on to wedding photography. I tell my friends that most photographers will even do it at a discounted rate if they are already doing the photography for the wedding. Its always worth it and another chance to have fun in front of the camera… and if you doing a post wedding session it could be another opportunity to wear your dress!

Flour Power! High speed photography Creative Photography Portrait session

Flour Power! High speed photography Creative Photography Portrait session

Hey Hey! So I had the chance to have some fun last night with some friends and some flour in an abandoned building in Mayaguez. Beth runs a traveling art gallery out of her RV in the states and collects different kinds of animal bones to turn into jewelry and household items. I’d been dying to do some more highspeed photos and I was excited to try out the flour.

I think this technique would work really well as part of a second day photoshoot or ‘trash the dress’ session. The white flour won’t stain a white dress and the look is incredible. It would be a lot of fun the day after your wedding to go crazy throwing flour all over each other. I’ve even seem pictures done using colored powder and glitter mixtures…. the possibilities are endless.

Infrared Waterfall Creative Portrait Photography Session

Infrared Waterfall Creative Portrait Photography Session

This beautiful waterfall is just a few minutes north of Rincon and its a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. I hadn’t been up to these falls since I was in high school… seeing them brought back so many memories. Especially being on the trip with 19 year old Marina from western florida. She and her boyfriend were adventuring around the island and decided to take a trip to the falls. I watched as her boyfriend snap some photos of her and I could tell she wanted some more glamorous shots to commemorate her trip. I had my infrared camera on me and offered to take a few photographs. Infrared photography is a lot of fun and is a great way for me as a portrait photographer to add some creativity into a photo session. These are a few of the images I made of Marina that day.

Vince and Suzanne – La Copa Llena Seaside wedding in Rincon, Puerto Rico

Vince and Suzanne – La Copa Llena Seaside wedding in Rincon, Puerto Rico

This wedding was absolutely gorgeous, the flowers, her dress, and all of the little details made this seaside wedding at La Copa Llena unforgettable.

Vince and Suzanne live up north but vacation often here in Rincon. Their story is filled with Rincon Romance… they met each other for the first time at Pool Bar, a hot spot in the Puntas area, and Rincon has been a special place for them ever since.

La Copa Llena is one of my favorite venues because it has such a great combination of indoor and outdoor spaces. Its perfect for any kind of weather and also a lot of fun for me as a Rincon Wedding photographer because it offers a variety of different kinds of light and backgrounds to play with.
